Haven’t had a chance to chat with him.  AC still working well with the 134 conversion.  Now that it’s cooling off less needed.

R12 has gotten hard to find and expensive!

very nice detailled project. The R134 in Cal is $13 plus the governor tax of $9 that you get back when you return the can...

I was lucky a few years ago, I got a fully sealed whole AC at the junkyard... I did not expect it, but when I unplugged the first hose... fortunately slowly, all that R12 went up in the air... too bad... not in my eye while I was hunched over the radiator!

I did not bother with the sanden TR70 because of all the bad rap for it being a hog on the power... for sure, my joke: check the turbo... as soon as the AC is off I must gain 10HP...  I can't remember what I installed... as compressor, but it is borderline with the R134, I have to run full fan speed... I should probably install a parallel flow condenser

If or when I have to replace my Sanden May switch.  It does hog power for sure.  My 85 DX is totally different AC on and off.

I have to bang my head on the wall.  I never thought about power difference between Sanden/keihin.    Scroll vs piston.   My first crx came w Sanden.  It’s what I’ve mostly driven and never knew.   And I was able to get shaft seal rebuild kits back in the day from honda.   So I never looked at the keihin compressor bc honda didn’t have seal kits available.

turbo button….  Totally!

the scroll is very reliable.  Used in most home ac compressors by Copeland.  They are supposed to be lighter in weight than piston types.   In our case, the keihin bracket is small and light.  Sandens bracket is a heavy chunk of iron.  So weight is not helpful for our sanden

id be curious to test a car w a Sanden and Keihin to feel the difference.   I’ve already bought enough parts to run the Sanden.   I’ll put it back in service.   I do have some keihin.   I would like to get one going again and feel the difference

i missed the history lesson on the keihin.     I would like to try one.

thnx for the input guys!

Was driving the 85 today. Turned on AC, could hear and feel compressor engage but no cold air.  Looks like we have a leak.  When we converted it we put dye in so need to get out the black light to see if I can find the point of the leak.  Heat is coming!

Obvious leak is the shaft seal.  If you can’t see the dye,   Then it’s the e-coil.  3-4 orings in there

I have a leak detection tool, sniffer.  Need to put a charge on the system to see if the detector can sniff it out.

based on how noisy the compressor is it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the issue.

Took the 85 in to have the AC recharged and said it’s leaking out the front of the compressor.  Now in search of a replacement!

Bummer.   Sandens are scrolls.  When I took mine apart, there’s a wobble/gyro gear w bearings that makes the movable scroll wobble to create the pressure.  Wonder if it’s bad and causing the noise.  IMO, if it is noisy, it’s probably shot

if ur compressor oil is still clean, then consider removing the front compressor flange and replace shaft seal.  New seal kits available on line.  I recall you have low mileage.   Nice to reuse ur lightly used compressor for rebuild than getting unknown rebuild from elsewhere

i feel pretty confident on the oil quantity I figured out for sandens researched in the post.   Keihin seems to use more oil for the piston design

good luck.   I haven’t rebuilt mine yet to give advice

We found a remain so putting that in but keeping the original.  Going to try and rebuild it.

Good deal.  Glad ur keeping the old, low mileage one!  Known entity and hard to come by

I also reached out to Sanden USA to see who could rebuild it for me.  Local shops do not do Sanden only Kehin.
