I just had my 87 CRX DX in for california smog. I failed due to excessive NO (PPM)

What have you done to "prepare" for smog? Yes, we as californians have to "prpare" our older cars for this LOL...
How is your O2 sensor? When mine was not cycling it measured high NO(ppm) as yours did..
Has the catalytic been changed at all?
Does it need a tune up? etc...

Thats why you are failing .. It will cause hot spots in the combustion chambers increasing NOx..

egr. your cats fine and NOx is due to high heat in the combustion chamber so its a carb car you might not be hitting closed loop. did you do a tune up recently? check if your timing advance is working right. It wont create a hot spot it will run hot though, your fighting your pistons by firing too soon its pushing down and wasting what power you do have also check for vacuum leaks, time it, new cap and rotor wires and plugs also air filter and oil change and check your egr since that is its job to keep NOx in check. with those things you SHOULD pass
