I just got done painting, and have smoothed the whole car over w/ 1000 grit (wet sand of course), but the rubbing compound I got doesn't seem to be any finer than the paper. Does anybody know a good compound I can buy that will really take the swirls out and bring out the shine?

first you will need to wetsand with some 2000, then some 3000

then you will need to do it in 2,3,4 or even 5 steps if you want it bad ass

youll need a pollishing compound, then i like 3M finess-It, then a swirl remove, and and a final glaze, then go over the whole car with a pollish wax and a sealant(typical meguires/mothers/turtle wax)

I can't find any better than 1000 grit, do you know where I can get the 2 and 3K?

look for a body shop supply store, and some orililyes(sp) do paint and body supplys too

So do I do the polishing in multiple steps, or repeat the sanding process a couple of times?

you need to do both, at least sand with some 3000 wet, then switch to the pollishing compounds and work progressivly finer and finer

Finally found some 2500 grit but they only sold it in 100 packs.

However, after wet sanding with the 1000 I found a siwl remover for cheap at the parts store (3 and change for the bottle). The small patch I had time to do now has a mirror finish, so I'm sticking with that. Look for picks in the next week or so once I get done buffing it out.

think you can pick up some 2000 grit at napa . that is what i use some rubbing compoung and some sweral mark remover. their is no way your going to buff out scratch from a 1000 grit wet sand paper. i have a electric buffer. and can't make 1500 grit shine. good luck with that

The patch I did came completely smooth from the 1000 grit, so I am sticking w/ the compound right now. If I start hitting some harder patches I may do the 2000 grit.

Finally scored some 2000 grit. The first place I found it only sold it in packs of 100 sheets, somehow I figure I'll never use that much in my natural life, so I passed. Autozone came through in a much much smaller package after looking more closely at their section (the Napa only had 1500). Cross hatched the hood and after one time through with the compound I am much happier than the 1000 grit left me. Going to my brothers tomorrow to steal his orbital and then polishing her to a bowling ball finish!

Also going to take some pictures soon, I am proud of this one!

Ok, done w/ the paint (except now I have to paint the nose panel, lol)

After patching the sunroof w/ some sheet metal and spraying the whole car flat black (read, dicount primer)


After some QT w/ an electric buffer, my neighbor actually called his kid outside to come look at it, picture does it poor justice.



Black Spray Paint - $25 (.99 per can)
Various Sandpapers - $15
Bottle of cheap swirl remover - $4
Total Cost - $40ish
Look on the guys face who just dropped 2K on his paint job when you tell him what you spent... priceless

bigger pics???? is that rattle canned??? its a nice job. i got 2000 from autozone, they also had 2500 when i went. you could also go to a local dealer, or mom n pop body shop and ask/bumm beg whatever. bodyshop guys are normally fond of the doityourselfer, even though it cuts their business. guess there are enough retards out there without the balls to do it themselves

One of our club members swears by 1200 wet and dry, followed by brasso. Haven't tried it yet, but will be soon, and i'll update on the result.
