I know it's been a while since your swap but I'm needing help on the wiring. How did you wire up the heater switch and corresponding function/recirculation motors? Otherwise I'm gonna have to have it stuck on the one position all the time. It says you cut out the HVAC?

I'm using an 85 CRX, 89 D16A1 and complete harness from the 89 teg. Any help would be great!! Thanks

Thanks for bumping this! Thought this was a great article however there was some wrong info in Article 1, the precursor to Article 2 (the technical write up). The wrong info was

 

"Well among Integra's, only the 86-87 Integra's use this Vacuum Advance Ignition system (just like the the 86-87 Civic/CRX Si models do). This is a big reason why 86-87 D16A1's electronics & wiring are compatible (plug n play) with 86-87 Si's. Whereas 88-89 D16A1's electronics are not -- you cannot carry over & use (plug n play) the OBD-0 ecu/wiring/ignition system that 88-89 Integra's have into an 86-87 Si. It's just not compatible. But, you technically can convert an Si to OBD-0, but it's an enormous pain in the ass and I don't suggest doing it unless you're the adventurous type and love playing with wiring." 

 

I bought my car with the Blacktop installed and Shawn, the previous owner, said he used the 88-89 integra wire harness and did it in a day. His vehicle was broke down and he needed wheels in a hurry. Also I remember in Sindrlla's Wagon thread it only took that guy a weekend. This again is using the 88-89 integra cabin wire harness, the engine harness, and possibly the dash harness. All the brackets and fuse boxes from the integra bolt up beautifully to the 3G. After talking with him it sounded like a majority of it was just repinning some of the connectors which is what was also expressed in the Sindrlla thread. Also some wires may need to be removed should you choose to do so (like the climate control). I have not done either one but it looks like to me the Blacktop is the easier of the two swaps and it is OBD0 so it is tune-able. Maybe I'll do a write up since that's the harness I'll be using for my D15Z1 swap.

Been researching this, but still have a few things unclear.  Can someone tell me more about using a browntop distributor / cam journal on a blacktop to keep vacuum advance?  I may have a nice cheap rebuilt blacktop on my hands and am considering my options....

Swap to the 88-89 integra harness and ECU, grab a 90-93 integra ECU for a ecu board swap, and solder in the PM7 chip into you ECU and you already have a better car. If you run that crappy vacuum advance distributor your going to be limited on your tuning, you have to run the 86-87 ECU, meaning if you port and polish it (cheap easy hp) you wont be able to tune it. Also that ECU is part of why the D16A1 only made 113 hp. Maybe you can find the JDM Browntop ECU? Still won't be able to tune it though.

I thought that the 88-89 had two plugs for the ECU like the 86-87 teg..?

(i really need to get that othe teg here to strip. I can really take my time and mark everything. (but probably NOT)

I've got several 90-95 teg ecu's (well, one that's a GSR one) and could go from there.

 

Is there a link to this swap?

This is where doing a 'search' does NOTHING for me but waste my time.

There are just TOOO many hits on 'ECU' alone, besides TEG, INTEGRA, SWAP, On and on..

Even some of the pinned or stickies make one go on rabbit trails..

No, the 86-87 case is too big, you have to use the 88-89 metal integra case (same mounts, smaller rectangle), which is smaller and the same size as the OBD0 and OBD1 boards and possibly some OBD2 boards. Then swap in the board of your choice. If you use the 90-93 integra ecu board in you 88-89 integra ecu case you can swap in the PM7 chip, then essentially you have a "PM7" board or at least a board chipped for your motor, if you go OBD1 then you can swap in the P29 chip. There is a little more to chipping OBD1 though

winfab_tuning on ebay sells copies of the PM7 and the P29 chip, both under $30 shipped to your door

it was a fairly simple swap really. just time consiming with the car being 17 miles from my house and only an hour here and 2 hours there to work on it. the way i saw it was that we (remember that sindrlla did a LOT of the work) had 2 options. #1 being to use the complete 87 civic SI harness that i have here or #2 use a complete integra harness. either way, we had to put a whole FI harness in the car but if we went with the SI harness, we would have had to make all the changes to electronic advance where with the integra harness it was already setup for that exact engine. with doing this, the integra cluster plugged right in and we also used the integra combination switch to eliminate as many wiring changes as possible. we did have to make all the connections beside the drivers seat, adapt the civic clock plug, rear defrost plug and dimmer switch plug to the integra harness but that was no big deal since all the wire colors matched. the integra fan switch on the climate control did plug into the civic switch but the wiring configuration was different so we had to repin that plug also. the integra harness also has another second plug for the climate controls because of all the push button functions but the civic wagon has manual controls so that plug was just tucked back behind the controls... one day i will have to pull the AC switch wires out of that harness but for now, her AC compressor is shit anyway.

as far as making the teg cluster fit... i used the original civic cluster hood and glass then put the integra cluster behind that. the modifications that needed done were some trimming to the cluster mounting points and a new hole had to be drilled in the civic's glass cover because the integra cluster has the trip meter reset pin in a different location. this leaves your cluster glass cover with an extra unused hole and rubber grommet but nobody will ever notice it unless you point it out. if they do notice... it's a conversation piece about your "JDM" cluster and how it needs to vent because the speedo and tach move so fast 

chris, if you decide to go FI with your wagon, i can help you get the integra cluster mounted in the wagon hood and glass since it would be a lot easier for me to do a second time around... if you wanted to go that route

the plan was to make the least ammount of wiring changes as possible so to eliminate wiring/electronic gremlins in the future and make it as reliadle as possible since Jenny needs this car as her DD... hopefully one day she can get another car to DD so she can preserve this wagon and finish up the rest of the interior and exterior work that it needs then she can fully enjoy it. im saving all of my creativity for my next project!
