The family runabout we have is a honda HRV - as they were never sold in the USA to the best of my knowledge they are best described as a baby CRV.  Mine has a cvt gearbox, which has been giving problems for some time and getting increasingly noisy.  I obtained a spare box which had a different problem of ceasing to work when hot, which is a lower control valve body problem. Over easter I pulled the old box, removed the lower control valve body, installed that in the spare box, and put the spare box in the hv.  So far so good - a nice quiet gearbox which keeps going when hot and does all the right shifts.

I then pulled the old box apart to see what the internals looked like.  Very interesting construction, with variable diameter pulleys, a metal belt, start clutches engaging a second smaller biameter ring gear on the diff, and several other clutch packs in the assembley.

For those who have never seen a cvt setup, and the real reason for this post, here is what the internals look like.
