i burn tons of oil. it smells like a ford. it also doenst help that there is a hole in the trunk floor and the exhaust is broken off before the bumper
lol its basically a suicide car right now. i am getting an exhaust done and fixing rust holes, but i need to figure out whats causing all this oil

sure the car has some miles... 250k
lol
but with such high compression why is it burning so much oil? i know im getting some crankcase pressure because my valvecover goes puff puff puff
but if it were rings why would i have such good even compression. it seems to pull quite well too (havent driven it too far, get a headache quick)
could it be leaky valve stem seals? could leaky intake valve stems seals cause all the oil burning and exhaust valve stem seals cause the valve cover to puff puff puff?

its an HF 1.3

im gonna try to copy this for you because its a good explaination, i never use capital letters or periods when i type though, so if i miss a few and it all runs together bear with me

ABNORMAL OIL CONSUMTION from a motorage ase studyguide

The three common causes of excessive oil consumption are oil leaks, valve guide/valve seal problems,, and piston ring problems.

When an engine is using oil, inspect it visually for serious oil leaks first. Check the crankcase ventillation system as a matter of routine. If you don't the oil leaks may appear in spite of the seals and gaskets you install.

A careful road test can be a critical diagnostic step in determining the cause of the oil burning. Note when the oil smoke is most intense. Typically, bad piston rings will make the engine smoke worse when it is accelerating - especially when it has been idling for a long time.

When a vehicle suffers from worn valve guides and/or bad valve stem seals, you'll see exhaust smoke during deceleration. The high intake vacuum that occurs during deceleration draws the oil through the worn guides or seals. Remember the catalytic converter will super-heat the oil and reduce some of the smoke that would have been seen on pre-converter models.

Reading the spark plugs can also confirm your diagnosis. When the excess oil is coming from the valve guide, the oil deposits on the spark plug tend toaccumulate only on one side of the spark plug. When the excess oil is coming from the rings, the deposits on the spark plug tend to accumulat around the entire spark plug.

Before you blame either the valve guides or the valve seals for an oil consumtion problem, verify that all of the oil return holes are clean. If oil cannot drain freely back into the crankcase, it can accumulate in the head and be drawn by vacuum into the combustion chamber, increasing oil cunsumtion and causing exhaust smoke. Valve stem seals are designed to keep normal ammounts of lubricating oil from entering the combustion chamber, but seldom work well when submerged in oil.

THE END

i hope this helps, its helped me a few times, and the next steps would be compression check, wet compression check, and then a cylinder leakage test, but normally you can diagnose with the article above.

you must have missed it in the title, i did compression check with 170 across the board. that thing about oil return holes though, i havent taken off the valvecover yet. gonna get on that tomorrow. my friend is letting me borrow a valve spring remover and i will be able to do the valve stems if that is indeed it.

It is possible to have bad oil control rings and still have good compression. My '86 HF was going through 1 1/2 quarts of oil in 500 miles before i rebuilt it. It had plenty of power. It had new valve stem seals in it. I reused that head on the shortblock I rebuilt and had no oil consumption.
It'll work.............Trust me

DAMMIT thats what i think mine is doing. fuk i dont wanna rebuild another engine and i dont want to swap to FI but i have a d16a1!!
grrr

You can replace the rings in the car. Just take the head and oil pan off and go to town. biggrin.gif

uhm, i said i dont want to rebuild it. i have a tendency to overdo things so if i do rebuild it, its coming apart, getting upgraded parts, 3 angle valve job, and whatever beefing it would need to turbo. i think at this point im going to look for motorcycle carbs for my d16a1.

Go FI. Its easy, and pays off.

Bike carbs FTL. Its like taking one problem and replacing it with 4.

Anyone know a way to see if it oil is returning to the crank case as it should? Im burning oil when it starts in the morning and when I get on it hard. Also im burning about 2 quarts every 700ish miles

Yeah. Take the valvecover off after a drive. If the head is full of oil then it isnt working.
