A couple of people asked me to start a build thread. So here it is, my build thread.

The projects aim is a total restore in a classic racecar trim. I won't show any pictures of the stripping, just the build.

Here we go:

There was some slight damage on the rear left quarter. I had been repaired badly, see for yourself:

Fixed up and slightly modified rear end:

I decided to weld the sunroof:

I had to remove a 'small' part of the framerail, because the fluidampr on the B16 hit it:

Welded it:

We had to fix 2 common places of rust:

Seamwelded the whole chassis to get some more stiffness in it:

Painted the interior in the final color:

WOW!!!

Nice color choice, and I REALLY dig the idea of bonding the rear trim/center trim piece. VERY clean. I wish I would've done that on my project before paint. Can't wait to see more pics!!!

I agree, an interesting modification. Why did you decide to eliminate the centre panel on the rear? Does this help solidify the trim strip? Also, what have you done about the key for the hatchback or are you just going to forget this item and just use the interior latch?

Just curious about the sunroof weld. Did you cut out more than the plug and use a roof from another car? I would like to know the process. The reason I ask is that the white area angles to one side. JS

thats an awesome garage!!!
I wish I had a place that nice to work on my cars!

And I like the color, cant wait to see the totally finished project.
And I have to respectfully disagree about the center piece mod. The car just looks better with a solid black/red section for the taillight area. I might change my mind though when I see the car completed.

Well, I never really liked the way the rear end looked on our cars. I like the actual overall appearance, but for some reason they all look crash-damaged (my car actually was, bad repair job). I wanted to fix it, so I had a panel created instead of the center panel, so now the rear trim attaches at three places (left, right, and now under the rear panel). I don't really care about the rear hatch, since it will be a stripped-out racecar, so it's keyless.

Actually, the roof is the hood of some Mercedes transporter/van. It matched the curvature of the roof perfectly. An exact matching plug was cut from the piece of metal you see on the picture, and welded in.

Too bad that isn't my garage smile.gif. It's the bodyshops garage, I'm picking it up tomorrow to bring it back to my own location.

Taking the car home again, first time outside since the painting. And I like the color! wub.gif wub.gif

First of all, I needed an e-brake, so the car wouldn't live its own life biggrin.gif:

So I took out the subframe, took it apart and used this:

This is how the finished surface looks (really great stuff!):

Remounted it (did I say I love that stuff? Great structure!):

Cleaned the rear engine mount, and remounted it (very hard to get to when there's more stuff back in the engine bay, like an engine smile.gif):

Yeah, pedals!:

And of course the brake booster (you can't fit the pedals without mounting the brake booster):

Re-mounted door handles and locking mechanism (not shown):

That's all for now! wub.gif wub.gif

Nice finish and good pictures. Just a heads up about the pictures. I'm surprised the site actually lets you load such a large format(3096x2602). Maybe you could downsize those just a bit so that when you enlarge them that you don't have to scroll so far back and forth just to see detail. JS

Sorry mate, I don't know what happened there. When I uploaded them, imageshack told me it was going to optimize the pictures for 'internet use'. They were all the same size originally, but it skipped resizing some of them smile.gif.
