Without putting a manual switch to the rad fan, has anyone found a cooler thermo switch which screws into the lower rad turning the fan on earlier?

Perhaps not exactly what your after in terms of a replacement for the stock screw-in switch, but Davies-Craig make a range of adjustable switches:
