Since the car is now running fuel injection I have decided to go through and learn about the stock carb and clean everything up. The problems I had before were with the idle circuit. It ran fine off idle and all the way to redline. I will keep adding to this post on my progress.

Issue #1: At the bottom of the accelerator pump the housing comes off with 3 screws and the diaphragm is in there. When I shake the housing I can hear somehting rattling around in there. Maybe its a check valve ball or something but I need to know if this is normal.

Issue #2: What is behind the black plugs on the front and back of the carb and how do I get them off?

I took most of the jets/orifices out and they are in parts cleaner for the night. Once the carb is stripped I am going to take it to a shop and get them to soak it as there is probably dirt in the idle circuits.

Any chance of getting pictures?

Good idea

If I can get it off then it looks like I would have access to all of the little openings in the primary barrel. There are two of these plugs, one on the primary side and one on the secondary. They look to be held in by the surrounding metal being stamped. I'm working on getting pictures.

Ya, I think those are the plugs for drilling the carb when they made it and are not suppose to come out.

Ok after cleaning everything out soaking it and blwoing air through it all the passages are clear now for sure.

I think I found a problem though. On the top half of the carb there is a long brass tube that hangs down with a spring attached to it. It sits right above the two jets in the float bowl. By pushing this with my figers it sometimes gets stuck in place. I'm no carb expert but this is the only thing that would make sense with my intermittant running out of gas problems. Any ideas on how to make it slide more smoothly? I think the tube is pressed in somehow.
