Not as sweet as a fastback but she'll have to do.

hahaha sounds like a nice ride.
I actually didn't want a fastback. They look good, but have you ever tried to look out the rear of one? The C-pillars are huge, and the rear window just a slit. I've always had cars that had great visibility front and rear. I tell people that driving my Civic is like driving an 'aquarium' because it has so much glass and small A, B, and C pillars. My old BMW 2002 also had great visibility.

The word is 'Terlingua', which were the racing Mustang Coupes in the 1960s.

The car was originally owned by a little old Japanese Lady from Gardena, CA. She bought it new, and drove it for 30 years before giving it to her nephew. He drove it for a couple of years, blew the 289, and put a 302 in it. He then stopped driving it and it just sat for a couple of years in my backyard.

My friend was actually at my house talking to someone on his cellphone about selling the Mustang. A voice in my head kept screaming "Buy the Car!". I tapped my friend on the shoulder and told him, "I'll buy the car for $1500.00". He looked at me and said "What?". I repeated "I'll buy the car for $1500.00". He got back on his cellphone and told the other buyer, "Something just came up, I'll call you back", and hung up. And the Mustang was mine.

Now mind you, at the time I was unemployed, and looking for a job. But I have wanted a Mustang since 1965.

My thoughts exactly Jerf, don't worry Madkore it's a classic and that's a good start, oh yeah and the badgeless part........ sexy!!!!

I had the body shop strip all the side moldings, rocker panels, logos on the front fender, and the chrome 'tridents' on the rear quarter panels. All of the holes were welded shut and leveled. The entire car was stripped to bare metal, reprimed, and repainted. They also pulled all the windows and trim before painting.

I really like the way it looks now.

Well thank God for that, 'cause if I wasn't, this would probably have never worked.

Posted some pics of the 66 Mustangwhen it was still at the body shop in my gallery .

You can see the sides are completely smooth, no badges, trim, rocker panels, or logos.

SO what plans do you have for the engine? are you keeping the 302, going 289 throwback, or upgrading the 302 for a fresh one?

Right now, I'm keeping the 302 because it has less than 10K on it. We put an aluminum 4 barrel manifold and 4 barrel carb (it was a 2 barrel) on the 302 with a mild cam. We are also adding headers and a dual exhaust system. It should be good for about 300 horsepower. Remember that an 66 Mustang weighs less than 3000 pounds.

Eventually I want to buy a Ford crate engine with the aluminum heads for $3200.00. I would then have the heads ported and polished, and put in a much bigger cam. I should be able to generate 400 to 450 horsepower with this combo.

Nice, but why wouldn't you try for a 351 Cleveland? just curious.....

The Cleveland 351 is the same basic block (taller deck and better flowing heads) as the 289/302/5.0. You can stroke and bore the shorter, lighter block to get ~338cui as I recall. And you will have more room inside the engine compartment which is tight to start with. The '67 Mustang grew larger to fit the FE block.

I would stay with the 302 block if it truly only has low miles on it and spend all of your money on the heads and cam. The GT40 heads in aluminum are very nice.

The real question: Carb or Injection? The Carb is period correct, but FI will make more power and be a lot easier to tune. You can get ITBs that look like the old individual Webers or a big single TB that looks like a carb.

For now I am keeping the low mileage 302.

I will eventually buy either a Ford 302 crate engine with the aluminum GT-40 heads, or maybe splurge for a punched out 302 with aluminum heads. They can bore and stroke a 302 to 348 cubic inches now. I want to dial in the suspension and brakes before switching to a mega horsepower engine.

I want to keep the 302 because it's lighter than a 351. The Mustang should only weigh about 2800 pounds. Replacing the iron intake manifold and iron heads will probably save me 100 to 150 pounds off the nose of the Mustang. We already put the battery in the trunk, which is equivalent to moving the engine back about a foot for better weight distribution.

This is why the Mustangs killed the Corvettes in Trans Am racing. Even though the Vettes had fiberglass bodies, the Mustangs were lighter.

This is essentially a low dollar project. Another reason to stay with the perfectly good 302 for now. I just want to spend what is necessary to get the car looking good and running good.

Even with the purchase of the vehicle, the body mods and new paint, new Painless wiring harness, all new Autometer gauges, 5 speed manual trans conversion, front and rear disk brake swap, all new suspension with Poly bushings and Koni shocks, 9 inch rear end with LSD and 3.55 gears, and new interior, I probably have less than $10,000 in the entire project.

Of course, I still have to buy a stereo, and alarm, and front seats to finish the interior.

I will be running an Edelbrock 650 cfm 4 Barrel carb that I got for free.
The Right Price!

Of course, I can always bolt on a Paxton Blower if I really want more power. Paxton Blowers are rated at 500 to 550 horsepower for a 302.

The complete Painless Wiring harness for my Mustang was about $550.00 from Summit Racing. It covers everything from the headlights to the tail lights.
