that bites!  120mph for a novice?

BTW - got a link for the Dual WAAS-enabled 10hz bluetooth GPS?  Just curious as to the specific model you used.

I went over to Jackson, TN, for the Hub City Speed event at the Jackson Dragway.

There were about 25 participants.  I was 5th overall and 1st in Super Unlimited.  It was a very fast course, which put me at a disadvantage to the faster cars.  The overall winner was a novice with a ZL1 Camaro.  He reached 120 mph on the big straight, where I could only manage 75.  Can't compete with that

Yeah, too fast imho, given the location. The members of this particular club are dedicated and work hard, but they are getting big enough that they're starting to have issues with the way things are run.  They need to get more efficient and pay closer attention to safety.  It shouldn't take 6 hours to run a 25car field through 5 laps each.  They also don't have work assignments, no dedicated corner stations, and no fire extinguishers, red flags, or radios. There are delays because they have about 10x more cones on the course than they need to, and they don't all get marked, and what few course workers there are don't have a clue where the cones are supposed to go, so the course designer had to constantly run out and tell them where to put things.  Most of these things are fine when you have 10-12 participants but when you're pushing 30 they start to be a problem.  I'm sure they'll figure it out eventually.

Anyway, here is the unit I bought.  Street price seems to be about $140

awesome - that was the exact model I was looking at!

All things about "going fast" need to have an adequate safety margin factored in because there is always going to be something happen that someone didn't expect.  Like catastrophic brake failure @ 120mph?  What would a newby do in that kind of situation?  Likely plow head on into the nearest immovable object..this is why we can't have nice things...

Is the track narrow or is it the camera that makes it look that way?  What camera?  It looks like a hoot!

Some portions are narrower than others. On the narrow portions only two cars side by side fit. On the wider portions, 3 cars side by side fit, maybe even 4.
I used a GoPro3

neat video!  Looks fast :-)

Blytheville was rained out this weekend.  They still held it, but I don't have rain tires, so there was no point.

I need to get some.

It's a shame, I just installed the Medieval Pro dampers and a used but full tread set of Avon slicks, and adjusted the front ride height to eliminate the positive camber change.  The car is going to be much faster.

Oh well, hopefully Grenada won't be rained out this weekend.

I had to skip Grenada yesterday due to another commitment. But I went today.

The Avons use much less air than the Hoosiers. Hoosiers were 48/37 and I started the Avons there but by the last run I was down to 36/27.

I set the Teins at mid adjustment range on the front and full stiff in the back. I adjusted them softer in the rear and stiffer in the front with every run and the car was very tail happy. It was digging in by the end but I think now that I have the air pressure set I’m going to keep messing with them.

The HF trans has absolutely got to go. I think it probably cost me two seconds with all the downshifting I had to do. Back to the Si trans it is.

Anyway, I was 6th of 25 but I was not as far out of first as usual so I gained some ground there plus I’m normally 2-3 seconds behind mike but I was a little over a second today, and I beat JD for the first time ever.

Good things are coming with this combo

Last event of the year for Mississippi Region, at Columbus AF Base.

Great course, fast as usual.

Now that I have the air pressure for the Avons more or less nailed down, I was concentrating on the settings for the new dampers.  I had them set mid range for the front and full stiff for the rear, based entirely on the spring rates.  It turned out it didn't make much difference where I set them.  I tried full hard front and full soft rear and it didn't really change the way the car handled.

I had a podium finish on Saturday, dropped down to 4th on Sunday with fewer drivers.  Saturday I did a few fun runs and dropped my time 1.3 seconds.  I hate doing that but it rained and the first session for my run group was basically a wash (the second run group got all runs in the dry), so I took the opportunity to pretend the three fun runs I took were my afternoon session.  That time would have put me 4th of 25 instead of 6th, but made no difference in my class finish.

But oddly, the car had way more understeer Sunday than Saturday, and I was slower because of it.  Overall the car is not rotating as well as I would like, so in the offseason I'm going to put some thought into what minor changes I can make to address it.

Anyway, fun season in the books.  Now to work on replacing the trans

I went out to streets of willow once again this weekend. I beat my PB @ 1:41.888 with a passenger. No footage this time around, just this photo. 0c094a5a3f6b8f2ea013138a3daf353b.jpg

Autocross season started this last weekend.  Mid South SCCA was at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium tan lot.

IT was rainy and cold, so we had a poor turnout of 16 drivers each day.  It dried up enough by start time that times were good and by the last run group the course was dry.

I ended up 10th in raw and 12th in PAX on Saturday, mainly because I only had two runs before I had to bow out with a mechanical.  I repaired it successfully that afternoon and returned Sunday to claim the 2nd spot in raw and 5th in PAX.

Top raw time was an HS Fiesta ST.

After my suspension modeling and cyphering over the winter, I'm prepared to say my setup seems like a success so far.  I'll wait for the photos to come out so I can see how much body roll there was.  But the car was fairly neutral handling, with mid corner to corner exit understeer and oversteer if I jerked the wheel.  It was definitely quick - I was still dropping .5 to 1 second per run when I ran out of runs: 44.1, 43.4 +1, 42.6 +2, 42.1 +1, 42.5, 42.0, 41.4 +1, 41.1

Nothing coming up this weekend outside.  My son and I are running the indoor AEKC kart league this season and this Saturday is the big finally.  We're both in 3rd overall in points and he just got his first win last week.

Double day event this last weekend.  The Liberty Bowl site is still unavailable but we have a site in DeSoto County MS that is quite a bit smaller but we can get two days for the same price.  It’s also a lot more visible, and we frequently have people see us from the Interstate come and watch.  One guy and his son saw us Saturday and came back Sunday to participate.

Had a great turnout on Saturday - 24 drivers.  We were short handed and I worked my butt off from 8 am to the driver meeting at 10:45 each day.  I ended up with a 3rd place raw and 2nd place PAX finish.  Sunday I didn’t do as well and ended up 8th of 21 in both raw and PAX.

I didn’t like how the car handled.  It’s pushed a lot more than I would like.  I dropped the front height a quarter turn and it improved, and then another quarter turn and it improved again, but it was still pushing and didn’t want to rotate.  I think maybe i need to try plugging a 450 lb rear spring rate Into my model and see what it looks like. I may just order a set and swap them out to see.  I always considered the suspension model to be a starting point and that tuning would be required.  It seems that the car reacts to different surfaces and course designs by handling quite a bit differently. Last weekend’s venue does not have as much grip.  Man I wish I could get an adjustable rear ARB for this car.

Anyway, next event in 3 weeks.

FYI my son set the track record for youth karts this week.  He’s really coming along and loves it.  We both finished third in points in the winter league and I was second and he was third in the summer league.  I’d like to move him up to a LO206 gas kart soon.

Got a Sunday event this weekend in Stuttgart, AR.  ARSCCA has a new venue that's much larger so it will be worth the 2.5hr drive.

I'd go Saturday too but the Ironman 30 minute enduro at the local ekart track starts at 10 and my son wants to see it.

They put him in an adult kart on Wednesday at K1 Speed in Atlanta, so we got to race together.  The last race, he beat me and set the 7th fastest time of the week (after the leagues had already had their weekly competition).  I wasn't taking it easy on him, either.

Disappointing results Sunday - 25th out of 36, but I'm usually down the finish order in Arkansas REgion due to the number of top nationals finishers there.  Still, the car isn't performing like I would like.

Two day event this weekend in Memphis.  Going to swap out rear springs from 400# to 450# and see what happens.  The understeer kills this car - keeps it from turning the way I know it can.

Saturday and Sunday event August 15th and 16th.  I was 8th overall out of 24 both days.  Disappointing because I'm faster than that. I bumped the rear springs up to 550# and reconnected the front ARB.  Still pushed hard, so I'm starting to wonder if there is an issue with the front suspension, perhaps the Tein struts.  It's academic now though since the car has major transmission/clutch/axle issues and is currently parked in the garage.  I haven't decided if I'm going to fix it or not.  I may just buy a Civic SI or a FIesta ST
