Like I said Scott. Your vote does not matter. Your electoral votes are spoken for either way.

Thy this one on for size.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage. "

Attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville 1805-1859.

My personal opinion is that the gov't could disappear tomorrow and there would be no societal loss.

Are trailered cars allowed?

hotshoepunk is moving back from the land of fruits and nuts early in 2009. He should be ready by then too.

we're texans and, by default, somewhat republicans.....

so I believe it is naturally ours to exploit regardless of supposed intention. We also would like to make it clear that there will be no ill effects while we use this (resource) "responsibly" and the natural progression of this thread will not be harmed... disregarding the facts that this thread will very soon become used up and void of natural purpose making the benefits from exploiting this thread negligible at best but in order to gain interest in our favor, we will continue to move toward drillin..err threadjacking until Alaskerrrr houston members unite.

Well....

I'm a conservative. My vote matters since I live in Ohio (swing state).

Palin does make me happy. She reminds me of a "Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington" type. I love how she put the governor's jet plane on Ebay! Very compelling life story, many successful reforms. Energetic, determined, attractive. Truthfuly, I think maybe I could be developing a slight crush on her.... ph34r.gif

See, that is my point. Are you a republican or a conservative? There is a vast difference in my opinion.

I envy you ability to have a vote of value.

Check out the messiah, sans teleprompter. Remind you of anyone?

And then told a whooper when she claimed to have made a profit! The truth is, it did not sell as a result of eBay (no bidders) so it was sold privately at a net loss to the state.

Lies and half truths is no way to run a campaign. But the republicans have found enough voting suckers to buy that crap in the last few elections.

As for the Libertarians amongst us who do not understand the concept of how taxes are an investment in your community's infrastructure- Think of taxes as the same thing as putting fresh oil in your engine. If you neglect the maintenance of your engine, it dies. The same goes for a community.

Whether you like it or not, we live in a form of Socialist society, all contributing for the common goal. The ones who bitch the loudest about taxes are usually the ones who benefit the most from how taxes provide for the greater good.

You better be able to explain that with facts... or is this another Lie/Half Truth/Fear Mongering piece of BS?

Come on Conservatives, if you are dropping bombs be able to back them up with facts.

"The ones who bitch the loudest about taxes are usually the ones who benefit the most from how taxes provide for the greater good."

I bitch a lot and can guarantee that I receive a disproportionately small portion of benefit compared to what I pay in. I am one in my "ism" that is definitely a puller.

Well, I (closet anarchist) can give some facts to go along with my little "ism" that I like to mention from time to time. I will follow with some opinion after that.

"ism" - This world is like a wagon, you are either pulling the wagon or riding in the wagon. I say, "GET OUT OF THE WAGON". I say that because as time has gone on, a larger and larger percentage or our country is riding in the wagon and not contributing anything. When there are too many in the wagon and not enough pulling, it will stop. When it does, all hell is going to break loose. Either the pullers will revolt and diminish the population of non-pullers, or the riders will revolt and diminish the population of pullers. Either way the wagon is destroyed and we must start over. It is inevitable, there is nothing we can do about it.

Now some facts to ponder.

49% of the people in the US pay no income tax at all. No wonder in recent surveys, 50% of people in the US said their taxes are about right.

The top 1% of US incomes pay 36.9% of the tax.

The top 5% of US incomes pay 57.1% of the tax.

The top 10% of US incomes pay 68% of the tax.

The bottom 50% of incomes pay 3.3% of the tax.

This is based on IRS data verifiable at IRS.gov

So basically 50% of the people have nothing invested in the system. How can that make anything better? If you have no ownership in something you have no incentive to make it better or verify that it is equitable.

OPINION:

Wealth redistribution is immoral and unethical. Punishing achievement is wrong. Do it long enough and the producer will quit.
Income tax is stealing. I would prefer a pay to play system where I get to pay for thing I use and not forced to pay for things I don't use.
When the wagon stops, you better know how to do something of value. By that I mean, get food, fuel, purify water, sanitation, fix things, actually make something useful. All of these thing will be important and valuable in the barter system that comes next. You should also be able to take care of yourself, 'cause there will not be anybody to do anything for you, unless you have something to trade. Hope for the best and plan for the worst.

Whether you know it or not, you get the benefit of all government spending. Example: If you have no kids in school why pay for schools? Because a well educated population raises the standard of living for all members of the community.

As the the inequity of the current tax system: No argument there. Reform is needed. A flat tax sounds good to me, but there could be flaws in that scheme.

Check your history, anarchy is not a winning system. And if the government that governs least, governs best is your standard of measure consider that the governments of Haiti, Liberia and Iraq must be huge successes.

Get your head out of the sand, human society needs a measure of organization. Imagine how much "freedom" you would enjoy on the roads if we all decided that we did not need to be "governed" by stop signs and traffic lights.

We are all in this together. If you are not contributing, then you are a detriment to society.

I did say "closet anarchist". Does not mean I am full on board, but I think I like the idea for my own selfish reasons. I don't usually get to act on my own selfishness as it violate my morals, so I just fantasize.

I realize you have about two years seniority on me but condescending to someone in the Triple Nine Society will not be effective. I have been trough just about everything you have in this country, so measure you words carefully. You are the biggest bomb thrower RPR has ever seen and I know you know that. In fact I think you are proud of it.

Name calling and insults are not productive. Do I need to quote you here? Didn't think so.

Back to work:

"Example: If you have no kids in school why pay for schools? Because a well educated population raises the standard of living for all members of the community."

This statement make great sense, but it includes a very incorrect assumption. The education system I pay into does not produce a well educated population, therefore it can't raise the standard of living for all members...it lowers it.

"We are all in this together. If you are not contributing, then you are a detriment to society."

This is a fairly true statement, but it seem like it might be saying it is about me. "you" If it is the I will gladly take large ...say $10K...bets that I both pay more into the system and contribute more of my time (volunteer) to society than you do. If it was not meant directly, then no offense taken.

"Get your head out of the sand, human society needs a measure of organization. Imagine how much "freedom" you would enjoy on the roads if we all decided that we did not need to be "governed" by stop signs and traffic lights."

Insult? Not sure. But I kinda like the idea of driving down the road knowing that everybody knows if you mess with that guy he will shoot you and stay out of my way. Could be fun. C'mon. See anarchy migh not be a winning system, but it sure could be fun sometimes.
