When it is in gear, how much play is there in the shifter?

My shifter has ALOT of play in it (feels like it's out of gear when it's in 5th). I never have a problem finding gears tho..... 1st is all the way over and up, 2nd is alllll the way over and down and so on.... my transmission has 280k+ miles ANd it's grinding in EVERY gear.
I have nothing...

damn lemons! I think it's time for a new tranny. My old stock tranny did that, but the b16 tranny works quite nicely now. wink.gif

It's more than likely the shift linkage itself, not the tranny. The bushings in the U-joint at the front are probably all worn out. I have brass bushings in mine now... smile.gif
