Hello there,

I'm having some problems with my 87 Civic. I'm fairly certain I've pin pointed it to the choke (Butterfle valve?) It doesn't seem to close enough so when I'm driving it idles WAY high!! I think it's a spring (I'm not sure what the spring is called) that has worn.

I tried adjusting the idle screw and it does nothing.

I've looked for vacuum leaks and that doesn't seem to be it.

If it is the suspect spring, do I have to remove the entire carb to replace it?

Thanks in advance!

The choke butterfly should open up after a short warm up. You can try to keep it open with a clothe pin or any small but large enough prop that will not be suck down the carb, 10 gauge solid electrical wire is a good prop.

As for the high idle, it happens with a vacuum leak between the carb and intake, that usually disappear after warm up.

From what I found out is that choke (butterfly valve) should open all the way when driving.

Is your setup still OEM? Or is it Devac? Or something else.

Il try to take pictures of the different adjustments screws n post later on.

Turns out the spring I've been looking out is baling wire!!

phenams:

As far as I know it's OEM, I haven't fiddled with the carb at all.

Here's a video that I took.....

Now that I know my spring is not a spring 2 questions... Can I buy just the spring without buying a rebuild kit/new carb? What is the spring called?!?

Do I have to take the whole carb off? Or can I just remove the arm?

dang.... good find, you can probably pop the rivets of the choke, but I have not fiddled w this part. Is this a 1300cc engine? any local junkyard will probably have some spare civics... I probably have one out of the 3 barrel, but I will be out of the country for a while... In vegas you can do without the choke and use the bailing wire to keep the choke valve open.

I believe it's the 1300cc? It's the 1.3L I'm starting to learn the ins and outs, but I'm not there yet!

I managed to finagle the wire..."spring" and the idle isn't as noticeably high, but it still isn't there yet. I will need to do a legit repair before smog next year......
