Hi,

I seem to have come rite, on wednesday(1st) I put in R200($32) into my tank
which made the fuel needel report i had just under a full tank.
It is now wednesday (8th) and am not yet reached the fisrt qouter.
so i still got loads of fuel left.

I used to be putting in R100($16) a week and my needel would report empty after that week.

I have ajusted the float bowl and its is verry low I dont think this is a good thing.
But its not costing me much now to run the car.
I have also installed new jets into my carb.

some odd things, my fan kicked and the temp needle wasent really high
so I am thinking I should get a new temp sender.
I have installed a new fan swich.
I am going to install a new thermostat.

So if canone could help me with my float bowl level and timeing.
I am not sure what possesion to move my distributor.

I am also going to install new spark plugs and maybe get a new rotor and maybe a new distributor cap.

I have noticed that too. Sometimes all it takes is a different Octane to obtain 35 extra kilometers per gallon.
My dx was pretty much the same way. If I ran 87 octane in it I would get 24 -28 mpg. But if I used 89 or 90 octane I could increase it to 34 - 35 mpg

The float bowl is slow to adjust, very much like your idle control. If you adjust it too much, you won't know, until much later. This is an item that you must have patience with when adjusting.

And your distributor has a mark on the cylinder head and the braket for the distributor. Line these up. This will make it at 0 advance.

Also American definition:
Header Panel = Nose.

And yes, I was asking about the mounting plate on the trunk with the reverse lights in it.

we used to have 97 now its 95 unleaded and 95 lrp
dont know if you have this in your country.

my car is compatible with 95 unleaded but is recommended i use 95 lrp.
noprobs with 97, aaah the good old days of 97 and lead

nope jets are exacley the same just new, we can get carb kits still in sa

yeah thats true, rite now its all the way down slightly turned up.
I cant offord R100 a week so not sure what to do.

oooh ok lol, yeah but rember my nose had a sub frame with a motor and clutch and
2 axels for opening and closeing the popup, its big heavey and hard to work on.

If the mark on the distributor is toward the rear of the head you have your timing advanced. If its toward the front it is retarded. YOu utilize the distributer to fine tune adjustment after you get the carb setup.

ok, I still gotta find this mark....

ok so my problem is i dont know if my carb is set rite, all i know i am not burning as much and my car is not over heating so things seem good, maybe i should leave it?

but i think my timeing is out , maybe, it might be ok?
and my float bowl is set on low really low too low for my likeing, but its saveing fuel and not over heating...

so i am clueless as to what to do next...

I thought you said you were getting bad (as in not good) milage out of your car?

And the 2 marks may just be casting edges. If this helps

I thought you said you were getting bad (as in not good) milage out of your car?

yes, i was, but i have lowerd the float bowl to try and make it better, seems to have worked, but its am so low it should be overheating its not.
i dont think thats too normal.

I bought another honda same as my first, body is too badly rusted so i am useing it as a doner car.

Going to put in new jets in the second carb and try that out.

If you engine runs too hot does it then consume more fuel?

How do the spark plugs look? It's very important to get the ignition timing set properly first. Are there any tags/stickers on the underside of the hood (maybe it's called bonnet where you are from?) 10 degrees off can be like 33% drop in gas mileage. It happened to my civic hatch.

Another question, I saw in the pictures of the carb some wires coming off of it. Is that for a solenoid or something else?

You're friend's cars look sweet. I wish I could get my sedan looking like that someday...

My plugs are black, the car has 300 000 km on it so i would think it will be burning some oil.

Nope no tags or stickers under the hood, well nothing to do with timeing anway.
I have nothing on what to set this on.

Yes thats the fuel solenoid ? gose click when I turn the ignition on.

My car has also been over heating, dont know if this can cause high fuel consumtion?I had a cooling system test and was told to replace my water pump which I did.The last owner of the car took out the thermastat and messed up the bolts for the houseing... I am going to sort this out and install the thermostat.. then have another cooling system test to see what happens. I might have a blown head gasket.
I have also got new spark plugs I am going to install.

as for the timeing... i know how to do it.. just dont know what to set it too..

Here is something that might help....

honda service manual

This is the service manual for Honda's sold in markets other than US and Japan. Look in ignition section. You use the timing marks that are on the crankshaft pulley. The red mark if you can find it. The red paint may have fallen off or been covered up by soot, so look for it carefully. It will be in between two other marks.
I think it should be around 15 to 10 deg BTC, but you need to be sure by checking the pulley for those marks.

The service manual above also has info about your carb too.

Overheating should be fixed first, since you risk blowing your head gasket if it is still ok (knock on wood). But I don't think it would cause bad mileage, maybe someone could confirm this with me. I know that lean running causes overheating.
