It's just a hobby and she never made seats before... Doesn't matter, because everything I did to this car I haven't done before either.

I can respect your choice in guages. Easily obtained in any Mk1 golf, cabriolet, jetta or scirocco.
The entire tool selection at Sears or the contents of a Snap-On truck will do you no good if you do not know how to use them.
