Dead Transmission In My Shuttle...

Just drove from L.A. to Arizona yesterday no problem. Then today while doing 30 on a small street it seems my transmission has failed. The car is a 1986 Honda Civic Shuttle (only FWD)

While driving along it seemed to have popped out of gear, suddenly throttle input would just rev the engine. The clutch pedal feels like normal, I can shift into any gear but each one simply makes a light grinding noise when I let the clutch out.

Any ideas on what might have failed? And Any tips on replacing it? Is there a specific year/type transmission I should look for to have better gearing? (I live in the mountains)

Thanks,

Kevin

Sounds to me like the inner CV joint ( SUBAXLE ) may have popped out of the side gear in the differential.

Right side of this page is what I am talking about:

The spring clip may be week or broken.

If the joint is not pushed all the way in there will be a gap between the trans case and the inner CV joint. This gap is allowing the spline to not engage the side gear.

Temporary fix:
I have had this happen and I put a hose clamp (in place of the boot band) on the rubber CV boot (small end) to push and hold the CV into the transmission (use the CV boot like a coil spring) until I could pull the drive shaft out and replace the missing spring clip. Or if the clip is ok you might just be able to push it back in.

Thanks for the great reply Jeff!

I really hope this is the issue, and I think it might be because I did just have an axle replaced...

Sure could be.  Might it have happened when turning, versus going straight?

When that happened to one of my CRXs (a few years ago), we were backing up, and turning sharply.  It actually popped back in, when the steering wheel was straightened (on one of two occasions).

Just did some testing today before the mechanic works on it tomorrow and basically confirmed this is the issue. We were able to get both wheels to engage for a time but then when I did a sharp turn it stopped working again... likely the new axle I had installed was faulty.
