trying to adjust the idle fuel mixture, as the lowest i can get it to idle currently is 2750 rmps ph34r.gif

tried with flathead and philips and just can't seem to get it to catch... trying allen heads next, but figured i'd post up now in case that doesn't work. anyone have an idea what kind it is? i'd prefer not to have to take the whole thing off again just to check a screw...

are you talking the Idle screw with the black knob on it or the Fuel/air mixture screw on the back of the carb ?
Well it doesnt matter (They both have a flat head screw)

well... the one on the back for fuel/air, but, where is this black knob one? cuz i don't have a screw with a black knob... and that very well could be the source of my problem. what exactly does it control.

on starting the car gives a backfire, assuming from too much fuel, then if you try to take the idle down past 2500-2700, it just dies out. there is also a very strong gas smell. seems to run fine, no spits or sputters now that i think i fixed all the vac. leaks, just that backfire on start-up and a horrendously high idle. laugh.gif

Well I'm just asmuing that the US model has a Idle mixture screw somewhere, The Canadian one has one on the side with the throttle linkage and it has a black knob on it so you can turn it by hand.

i found where you're talking about, and it should be there, but the previous owner was an idiot and lost a lot of the stuff off of the carb. i have it rigged with a few zip ties to control idle for now til i can get the actual brackets back.

i messed with mixture and the idle and it still refuses to run below 2700rpms...

If you have the idle backed right off, then you have a vacuum leak.Spray some carb cleaner around the carb base and vacuum line connections or start plugging off vacuum lines to source the leak.
The idle mixture screw should be set with the highest idle rpm so that is definately not your problem right now.Set that after you find the vacuum leak.

no, the idle is not completely back, it's just that if i put it back any further, it won't idle and sputters and dies.anytime it drops below 2700 or so, it will die unless i stomp the gas real quick.

Try turning the idle mixture screw all the way in till it stops(Be careful not to damage the screw by overtightening-just finger tight)and then turn the screw out 2 1/2 turns. That should be a good starting point for the mixture. If that doesn't help , then check to make sure that the solenoid on the back of the carb(firewall side)is plugged in.(That solenoid shuts fuel off to the idle circuit)Also could be the solenoid is not working-You could remove the solenoid by undoing the philips screw ,pulling it out and snip off the needle/pin so fuel will always get to the idle circuit.
