Ok, so I got a good deal on a Prelude OEM CD player, and put that in the Civic. VERY happy with it.

It's the same one ballade has in this thread:

Question:

I have it wired up so the backlighting comes on with the headlights, but it doesn't dim with the rheostat. When the old Sony unit was installed, the installer ran a wire to an open spade connector on the fuse box above the clutch pedal to trigger the dimming feature. I used this same wire to run the backlight on this unit, but is there another way of doing it so the dimmer can be used? I noticed the dimmer doesn't affect the clock either, so is this just a limitation of the factory wiring?

The only problem is the display dims too much if you turn the headlights on in the daytime. I can live with it, but if there's a way to fix it that would be awesome.

Thanks

Just an idea but you could tap into the Deforest switch to get your dimming effect.
I ran mine straight only because I like it full blast !! LOL

I run newer (1999 CR-V) Honda headunits in my Civics and I found the best place to tap into dash illumination is the bullet plugs that connect the climate control illumination to the dash harness. This is because I never cut or modify any part of the Civic's wiring to add the feature, so should I decide to restore to stock it would be unknown do anyone that that was done.

Correct me if I am wrong. I don't think the clock dims to the turning of the dimming dial.
I actually never checked. But it seems like it is dim on or dim off.

I have to wonder if that means the radio is also dim on and dim off (not adjustable).

Just throwing this out.

My stock 86 radios didn't dim, if radio was on they were lit. The 99 CR-V units I run now dims the tuner and knobs/controls with the dimmer dial while the rest of the dash is lit. If the rest of dash is off the radio's tuner area is lit a full brightness, but the knobs/controls and such are not lit. I can look into getting a video if you are not understanding or just want to see.

On pre 98 connector radios there is no variable dimming. You connect the red/black 12v light signal which turns on the back lighting and dims the display.

On 98 connector and newer there is variable dimming. You have two wires , a red/black wire to supply 12v when lights are on, and a red wire which is the dimmer
