Howdy Fellas,

Thought you guys might be interested in my latest mod....

I've installed a 2:1 steering quickener in the car.  I've always thought the steering rack ratio was too slow and have always wanted to improve it.

I ended up deciding on the Howe Engineering Steath steering quickener because it is the only one I could find that had inline input and output shafts.

I probably could have gone with a 1.5:1 ratio but an inline quickener is not availale in that ratio.

Anyway.....here's what I came up with....

This is the installed quicker next to an OEM (scrapyard) column.

And here are a few closeups...

And Top.......

After getting this installed last Saturday, I took the car lapping on Sunday..........

All I have to say is WOW!  I flippin LOVE it.  The steering effort is double what it used to be obviously, but it's made driving the car almost exactly like driving a race kart!  I only need 90 degrees of steering lock for the tightest of corners and it's given me the confidence to really push the car hard because I don't worry that I can't crank in oppo quick enough anymore.

For the record I spent the day on Sunday beating on cars with DOUBLE my horsepower at least.  I cannot recall how many Subaru STIs and BMW M3s I passed.  On average I was lapping my local track (Mosport Driver Development Track) about 6 seconds a lap quicker than these cars!

It was a good day, and I earned a bit of respect for being able to do so much with so little horsepower (140hp if I'm lucky, probably less)

Anyway, I'll get my videos of the day uploaded soon and add them here......

Cheers

Rob

All said and done after getting the parts I needed macining and so.....it was about $500 to do.

And that said......that ain't the ONLY thing done to the car to make it an STI killer..........the quickener was just the LAST thing.  The car has a mod list as long as your arm....if not longer.

Rob

Oh and to add to that......the STIs and M3 just WALK away from me in a straight line!  I'll try and get the vid posted tonight.

Hmmmm, interesting.

My stock Si steering rack required more turns than winding an 8 Day Clock. I had never considered a steering quickener.

I sourced an HF steering rack from the local pick a part for about $50 that bolted right up. Steering effort is only slightly increased but steering input is vastly reduced.

I find that the modern cars with awd and traction control are tough to beat. But I can worry anybody in the fwd/no traction control classes.

With the size of rubber you use Aren.....you'd probably need power steering.  It's bad enough with my 205s especially at slow speeds.
