She's Finally Home.

God, it's been a long, uphill fight. Bought the car almost a year ago, and it's basically been sitting at the mechanic's house being worked on, as I could get parts. Well, it's finally home..It actually made it 21 miles. And the EW5 I got from Chris runs very, very well, even carb'd. It cost me 285 dollars to get the backfees payed up and all that good stuff. DMV is your friend, as long as you're waving big bills or a check book.

I do have a few questions, thou.

On the way home, the cabbin filled up with smoke: I'm guessing it was because the mechanic spilled something on the manifold, 'cause it cleared up.

There's a really, really strong smell of burning rubber.

The car ran very hot. Did not overheat, but ran very hot.

Windshield wipers do not work. Get a 'clicking' sound from the fuse box.

Emergancy lights don't work. Turn them on, it kills the blinkers until you completely turn off the alternator.

Vent blower does not function

Horn does not work.

Any info on these questions would be great.

Now, a few pictures. The start of a very, very long project.

Note the differences between the 85 tail light (Left) and the 87 tail (Right). Connectors were different, too. Yes. That's a 1995 California registration.

Carb'd EW5. Yes, that's a pressure regulator.

A big ass mess.

Hey man, you gotta start somewhere! Be glad that you don't have to deal with rust wink.gif

I would suggest a parts car to combine into that car.... that way you can get a nice car and pay less for an entire parts car than if you were to get all the parts individually.

As for your problems:

The smoke and rubber thing must be related, check the exhaust to see if something is caught on it and burning, otherwise it is likely some oil on the manifold.

How hot is very hot? 3/4 or so? Thats normal. If it ran hotter, make sure the coolant is right up full and fully burped. Also, I would suggest a new thermostat and rad cap as part of your restoration process.

Check all your fuses and relays..... a lot of your electrical gremlins will disappear. Also, check the grounds too, thats pretty important.

I don't understand the problem with the Hazards... how do you completely turn off the alternator? Shut off the car? There is a Hazard fuse on the positive battery cable.... unless it has been removed, and then there should be some sort of inline fuse.

The blower... does it work on full? If not, check fuses and connectors, if thats not it, its probably the blower motor itself.

The horn... fuses again. If not, pull the steering wheel off and be sure the horn tang is contacting the steering wheel. It wouldn't hurt to clean the tang and riding surface on the steering wheel with some light sandpaper, and re-apply some electrical grease.

Cheers,
Mark

well the hazzerd lights thing i have had too. it turned out that inside the collom it self when you take it apart the swith runns on a ballbaring and a thin track it could have got inth ewrong spot and sorting out the lights, i learned the hard way after buying relays and a colum that it only needed that. the outhers im not sure.

Well, I just went out and checked all the fuses, including the hazard fuse on the battery lead.

They were all good. I replaced a couple, in the horn, hazard lights, and wipers, and they still don't work..Lol.

Here's the deal with the hazards.

They DO work, IF you:

A) Turn them on

B ) Hit the left or right blinker.

Then, when you turn them off, the blinkers may or MAY NOT work.

I'm thinking what you said..Somewhere, some grounds aren't right. Hopefully rats didn't eat thru the wiring or anything. That'd flat suck.

Check your fuses again.... are they blown?

Sounds like you have some electrical gremlins, probably in the form of short circuits.

You are going to have to look at a wiring diagram and start checking for continuity through the wire harness. If you aren't good with electrical.... start looking for a parts car sad.gif

Sounds like the Hazards are because of the switch. Check the wiring diagram. Jump the wires in the connectors that correspond to the hazards. If they come on and off easily every time you jump it, then its the switch, and you are going to need a new one.... unless you can CAREFULLY open the mulitfunction switch and see whats wrong. I wouldn't suggest it, because its quite complicated and very hard to put back together without botching something... I would know. laugh.gif

I'm thinking a lot of it has to do with the switch. I'll try what you said. Thank you.

I think I narrowed it down, just from ear. In the fuse box, there are two large cubical fuses..Something's wrong, there. You can hear a quiet, rapid 'ticking' from one of those boxes. Now my head lights don't work, either.

duh! I am a moron.

one is for the wipers and one is for the signals.

Chances are those are both fudged.

Actually, do your signals work? Have you looked at the lights to see if they are actually on? The signals will tick faster if a light is burned out (or the circuit is incomplete somewhere, I am guessing)

I would suggest going to the boneyard and replacing those relays.

Mark

Yeah. The turn signals work. I walked all the way around the car before going on the little road trip it went on today.

I was just out tinkering with the head lights..The right headlight works when it feels like working, the left has never come on. Dash lights work, all of the vent lights and the likes work.

Did you check your hazard fuse? I assume the turn signals work....

If its not the hazard fuse, bulbs, connections, or signal flasher, then its probably the switch.... try the jumper test as I mentioned earlier if everything else is in order.

Mark
