is the head gasket for the 87 DX carb engine paper or rubber because i want to check under the head but i wanna know if i have to replace it afterwards

It is a metal and composite head gasket...if you pull the head, you will have to replace the head gasket. Whaqt are you looking for?

i think you may mean valve cover
the valve cover gasket is rubber.
remeber the valve cover is the just covering the head.
