Ghetto Floor Mats:
I used ACC carpet left over from my other hobby car project. It's inexpensive, plastic backed, light weight carpet. It definitely not Porsche or Mercedes quality, but it looks ok.
First I made a template of the floor area:
...traced the shape onto the carpet:
...then cut out the piece (I used very sharp scissors):
I used Velcro (heavy duty adhesived back, ultra thin) to hold the "mat" to the floor board:
I strategically placed strips of the fuzzy Velcro on the floor:
I masked over the fuzzy side to prevent the glue squeeze out from getting on the floor and in the fuzz. I then mounted the hook side on top of the fuzzy side so that they were mated together:
Then, starting from the top edge of the mat, I peeled away the backing sheet from the Velcro and, using hot glue, I welded the hook side to the carpet's plastic back. I just laid a series of beads of hot glue on the Velcro adhesive, then pressed the carpet against it. The hot glue actually welds the Velcro tab onto the carpet's plastic backing. I did this one by one, starting from the top and working systematically down and ending at a corner. Since I had already matched the hook side w/the fuzzy side, there was no worry about the hooks "missing" the fuzzy target. When I was done, I had all the hook tabs in perfect position to mate w/the fuzzy tabs on the floor:
Done:
This ghetto carpet mat does not move or pucker! I made a similar one for the driver's side.
Cheers!
