Thanks...and thanks for the heater tip.

Last weekends weather conditions at the ax convinced me that having a functioning oem heater/defroster is a good thing! I'm certainly not gunning for any kind of championship; just trying to have fun and learn. So, in the interest of comfort and safety (clear windows), I'll take the weight penalty and keep the the oem heating/ventilation & dash for now.

The oem hvac system in defrost mode distributed the defogging air to the windshield and side windows better than anything I could probably come up with anyway. I'll take the slight weight penalty and concentrated on improving the 'nut' behind the wheel! laugh.gif

Cheers.

Well now that the 'other' hobby car is back online and moving under it's own power, I can move it outside and free up a garage spot to start parting out the donor 'tegs! biggrin.gif That will occur this week or next...

...in the meantime, I made a short shifter out of a 'teg shifter/linkage I picked up from PAP:

Here's the oem 'teg shifter showing the stock lever ratio of 4.94:1

...to shorten the shift throw, the ratio is decreased by increasing the length of the 'lower lever': the length from pivot ball center to the center of the shift rod clevis. The lower lever was cut in half and a section of .090 wall tube was welded in to increase it's length. The assembly prior to welding:

The increased length reduced the lever ratio to 3.65:1, reducing the shift throw 1.29". Interference w/the exhaust pipe below the shifter can possible occur if the lower lever length is increased too much.

Welded and painted, short shift extension:

I also angled the shifter ~0.5" off the centerline, toward the driver while I was at it. This was done by clocking the shift rod clevis when installing the 'extension'.

Cheers!

Short shifter part two: Bullitt Knob.

My other, 'brand x', hobby car donated a spare shift knob to the kakabox project (it even had the correct shift pattern). Only thing is that the knob's internal threads are M12 x 1.75 and the Honda is M10 x 1.50...hmmmm, no worky.

Well, with a welder you can make anything work, right? I cut the hollow Honda shift lever at the appropriate place. Cut the head off of a spare 12 x 1.75 bolt (another donation from the other hobby car):

Bingo-bango, little welding, little painting, Wa-La, Honda short shifter w/Bullitt knob!

Cheers! cool.gif

The parting of the two donor 'tegs has officially begun!

Fellow rpr member, lxndr, came over on Saturday and helped move the wrecked '87 'teg 5spd into the garage. This car was free and its main goal in life is to give up its 5 spd tranny to the Kakabox....more on that in a moment! ph34r.gif

We used the '87 'teg automatic (the engine/suspension/brakes, etc. donor) as a pusher vehicle:

After lxndr determined he couldn't see out of the windshield (he had to 'drive' the pos around the block into the garage), we both literally stomped up and down on the hood to smash it down'it was quite fun and somewhat satisfying! rolleyes.gif Pushing the car into the garage turned out to be an easy affair, and after removing some unnecessary debris, we uncovered the real damage:

ohmy.gif

Ok, so the valve cover is toast, and possibly the head too. No worries, I'm really just after the 5 spd and the 5spd supporting hardware and ecu anyway. So, a little more dismantling, getting ready to yank the eng/tranny and, huh, what's this?

sad.gif

This tranny is toast! Oh, well, at least I got a 5spd ecu and perhaps the 5spd jackshaft out of it! I'll be parting it out: it has a good interior w/power windows/factory graphic equalizer, cruise control, decent seats, and a set of excellent condition 14x5.5 'teg alloys w/great tires. I'll sell the parts cheap to recover my towing expenses.

FWIW, before I towed the car home, I looked underneath at the tranny and, from the bottom, it looked fine. I couldn't look from above because the hood, well, it's obvious from the pics! I don't think I would have dragged it home if I knew that the tranny was shattered! Oh well, nothing like having extra set of 1g 'teg parts. blink.gif

Cheers! cool.gif

The "Tale of Two 'Tegs" continues!

ThepParting out of the wrecked '87 5-speed 'teg is done: I've stripped everything off it that I want and now it's time to call the wrecker and have the hulk towed away. After the p.o.s. is gone, the '87 automatic 'teg will be parted out. The auto car is in excellent condition (except for the tranny) and will donate its 121K mile engine to the Kakabox.

Anyway, after pulling out the 'teg's rear disc brake axle, I was able to compare it w/an '86 CRX HF axle:

...the 'teg's axle is the top one.

Here are some numbers:
'87 'teg axle w/o brakes/brackets/hubs, w/spindles and internal torsion bar: 40 lbs. blink.gif
axle diameter: ~2.5 inches

'86 CRX HF axle w/o brakes/brackets/hubs, w/spindles: 27 lbs.
axle diameter: ~2.2 inches

Outboard face of LHS stub axle flange to outboard face of RHS stub axle flange distance: 50 11/16 inches
...it's exactly the same dimension for both 'teg and HF (and I assume all 1g/3g cars).

The 'teg axle uses longer bolts to mount the disc brake caliper brackets than ones the HF or Si drum brake axles use.

For the Kakabox build, I'll be using the 13 lb. lighter HF axle w/the 'teg's disc brakes; I'll transfer the 'teg's longer bolts and stub axle to the HF axle on the LHS, and the 'teg's swing bearing assembly (w/the longer bolts) on the RHS. The 'teg's caliper brackets, hubs, calipers, etc. can then bolt on to the much lighter axle! biggrin.gif

Cheers! cool.gif

...and then there was one!

After picking all the parts I needed for the KAKABOX, the day came for the '87 'teg 5spd p.o.s. to leave. After 'craigslist' selling the set of alloys and tires for $100 cash, I turned right around and handed the five twenties to a couple of 'scrap metal specialists' who promptly removed the blight from my garage.

Next up: parting out the '87 automatic 'teg...this one will donate it's 121K mile engine to the Kakabox:

One down, one to go! biggrin.gif

Cheers! cool.gif

so what did you end up getting from the garbaged teg. The tranny was dead. So was it just a waist of time?

Yeah, kinda...although for my $120 towing fee I did get:

5 spd ecu smile.gif
flywheel and usable clutch pressure plate smile.gif
5 spd jackshaft and drive axles (good) smile.gif
5 spd clutch cable (looks new) smile.gif
5 spd shifter and linkage smile.gif
e-brake and cables (spares)
front knuckles/ball joints and radius arms (spares)
front calipers (spares)
rear calipers and usable rotors (spares)
rear 'disc brake' stub axle and swing axle (longer caliper mount bolts) (spares)
core 5 spd (case cracked wide open at rear mount) mad.gif
core engine (block cracked at rear engine mount) mad.gif

...and a very greasy stain on my garage floor! blink.gif

When I say 'spares' I mean I have the same parts from the '87 automatic 'teg, so I can't really justify getting the 5 spd car for those parts.

It was a lot of hassle for parts that can be can be usually found at the local PAP...but, you could argue that I didn't have to lay out on the muddy gravel and cold to get them. In the end, I think it would of been worth it had the tranny been usable and the engine rebuildable. It's good I didn't pay any more for it! The '87 5 spd 'teg was the impulse buy, the '87 'teg automatic was not: it has relatively low miles and has been very well maintained, well worth the $'s I paid for it.

Now I need a good 5 speed!

Anyone?
