Are the D16a1 brown or black top head studs interchangeable with the DOHC ZC head studs found in the 2ndgen CRX or 4thgen Civic?

Thanks.

Aren,

I ordered an ARP set for the D16A1 and they supposed to be the same as the ZC DOHC - all of the studs are the exact same length.

I hope that helps.

the DOHC ZC uses 10 head studs all the same length - the D16A1 uses 9 head studs that are all the same length as the DOHC ZC, but uses one longer stud

I have ten equal length studs that work perfectly in the D16A1! I will snap a picture tonight of them. The long bolt is the one where the oil passes through block/head to get oil into the head - the thread height is set higher in that boss which makes the equal length stud work.

ARP on left and OEM on the right. They consist of the ARP stud kit #204-4702 (tapered shank version) for a 2.0L VW engine (M11 x 1.5). This is what was used in my Teg blacktop engine but I would recommend at least 1/4"-3/8" longer units as the nut is just flush with the top threads without a washer. I have not had any issues but it will be interesting to see what happens when the turbo goes in one day. JS

If you want one of these Logos send me a PM

A coupe of pictures of the equal length head stud kit supplied from the link I supplied earlier in this thread. The first is a side shot without the head - you can see that the center stud on the intake side sits proud of all the other studs...

And the second photo with the head on with the hardened washers and nuts on the studs...clearly each of the studs protrudes the nut and are long enough for the application. The head is not torqued down yet so the studs will protrude even more as the studs stretch and the head gasket is compressed.

Kirk Thank you again! this helps a ton! do you know if the 86/87 and 88/89 d16a1 have any differences on the head studs? and what year is that d16a1 in your pics?

The brown top uses one longer stud, the blacktop uses all the same length.

I disagree with this,

I have an 88 Blacktop D16a1 and not all are equal length, one is longer then the rest and i'm pretty sure its the same with an 89'.
